021 – Key Of The Door (Which Door?)

“21 today, 21 today, key of the door, never been 21 before!” What the hell does all that mean? Which door? We ponder this and other questions. We also discuss Alan Moore retiring from comics, a new Invader Zim movie (yes really),  lots of geekiness and some of our recent drunken escapades. It’s quite a mix. Please contribute your own thoughts to the discussion by emailing unattestedpod@gmail.com or using the simple form on the website, you know you want to 😉

Things we reference this time:

  • Why do you get a key for turning 21? Which door is it for Caz wants to know. There’s a song but it doesn’t make much sense these days.
  • A Gold Key WIth 21 written on it in diamonds
An example of 21st birthday key
  • We are the top 4 results in Google now for the phrase “tales of the unattested” but there is also a book of the same name from 2016 by the comically name Harry Balls. It’s available through Amazon and it’s about his life as a paranormal investigator. It actually sounds quite good, we might check it out.
  • Dan and Caz enjoyed a drunken night recently where jugs of cocktails were consumed thanks to the bizarre pricing policies of JD Wetherspoon. It’s cheaper to buy 2 jugs of cocktails for £10 than it is to buy a couple of individual drinks. Not sure this is really helping Britain’s binge drinking culture but we took full advantage.
  • Caz has been binging on space documentaries of like such as Black Holes: Mysteries Of The Universe and the numerous Apollo documentaries to mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landings.
  • Caz has an ongoing war with documentaries as she calls it. The war being her attempts to watch them late at night and get to the end without falling asleep.
  • Stephen Fry has done a couple of audiobooks specifically designed to help people get to sleep. One is titled Blue Gold.
  • Dan has recently listened to Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse by David Mitchell on audiobook and recommends it.
  • Caz likes self help books and recommends Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff by Richard Carlson. She also likes The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and recommends Happy by Derren Brown.
  • Dan likes Malcolm Gladwell and lists a few of his books.
  • Caz finishes off with a recommendation of the author Robert Greene and his books.
  • Our heroes are up to date with Legion (at time of recording) but are unsure what the hell is going on or where the plot is driving.
  • Will Professor X show up? Caz is clearly a big fan of James MacAvoy.
  • Dan has been watching Final Space and a YouTube Premium show called Wayne which he really loves. He also watched Cobra Kai which has rave reviews and wasn’t massively impressed. Beyond the nostalgia hit which wears off pretty quickly it’s essentially a pretty shallow high school teen drama.
  • Our heroes watched the film A Fantastical Fear Of Everything which is one of Caz’ favourite things but was completely new to Dan. They both recommend it.
  • Caz recommended the show Designated Survivor with Kieffer Sutherland but both our heroes stopped watching by the end of season one. It started off strong but quickly became pretty ridiculous.
  • Actor Kal Penn who also stars in Designated Survivor it turns out is a real life politician and served as part of the Obama administration. Leaving the White House to film A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas and then returning, amongst other jobs. How mad is that?!
  • Henry Cavill has been cast as Sherlock Holmes in an upcoming film about Holmes younger sister and also world class detective Enola Holmes.
  • The first gay supervillain is to be introduced into the DC extended film Universe as it has been announced that Ewen MacGregor will play Black Mask in the upcoming Birds Of Prey film. The character will be openly gay and it feels like it’s about time. It’s 2019!!
  • Ryan Reynolds teased Deadpool fans by talking about “phase 5” of his investigation into how the Deadpool footage was leaked without the studio’s permission. Fan reaction to that is actually what allowed them to go ahead and make the film. A move the studio is now glad of, highest selling R-rated film EVER!
  • A photo of a pinboard with lots of string linking items
Ryan Reynolds posted this Deadpool leak conspiracy photo
  • Caz almost watched the Tom Hanks film Sully but felt the trailer gave away the whole story. It’s a true story anyway and was pretty big news at the time.
  • Dan has binged the new episodes of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee and recommends it.
  • Dan finished reading the Spiderman & Deadpool graphic novel and loved the series. Well worth a read.
  • Caz is re-binging (new word possibly) the series Mindhunter from Netflix in preparation for the new season which comes out on August 16th.
  • Dan has just gotten an audiobook called Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. He’ll report back once he’s listened.
  • Alan Moore is retiring from comic book writing. Sad news about the great man but what a contribution.
  • Caz is ecstatic that there is a new Invader Zim movie called Enter The Florpus due for release on August 16th. She loves Invader Zim and suggests you watch the original series if you missed it.
  • Dan is excited to see the TV adaptation of The Boys by his favourite comic book writer Garth Ennis. It was released this week.
